Pelvic/Transvaginal/Obstetrical (OB)

Pelvic | Transvaginal | Obstetrical (OB)

Pelvic ultrasound:

This exam is used to evaluate the size and shape of the uterus, endometrium, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the urinary bladder. It is commonly ordered by a doctor to evaluate patients with pelvic pain, causes of irregular vaginal bleeding, IUD placement and many other pelvic related issues like pelvic inflammatory disease.

Transvaginal ultrasound:

This exam is used to examine female reproductive organs.

In women with abnormal bleeding, transvaginal ultrasound helps in determining the presence of structural changes of the endometrium.

In general, transvaginal exams are ordered by a doctor if you have:

Difficulty getting pregnant, pain during sex, pain during urination, pelvic or abdominal pain, swelling in your abdomen, unusual periods or bleeding after menopause, and urine leakage.

Obstetrical (OB) 1st trimester ultrasound:

This exam is used to visualize the embryo or fetus in its mother’s uterus (womb). The procedure is often a standard part of prenatal care, as it yields a variety of information regarding the health of the mother and of the fetus. It is extensively used to monitor the progress of the pregnancy including gestational age, normal anatomy, fetal growth, gender determination and detection of developmental defects before birth.

  • Pelvic ultrasound:  You must complete drinking 32 oz. of water one hour prior to the exam. You should keep your bladder full once you have started drinking. A full bladder makes your organs show up more clearly on the picture.
  • A transvaginal and OB ultrasound: These exams are done with an empty bladder, which means, you will use the bathroom before the test to empty your bladder.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to avoid any major delays.

You will check in the front desk, fill out questionnaires and consents, and make payments. You will be escorted to a procedure room, where you may be asked to change into a patient gown. The technologist will review with you the questionnaires and ask you additional questions. The technologist will position you on a cushioned table. After you have been properly positioned, the technologist will begin obtaining the ultrasound images.

While the images are obtained, you will be instructed to breathe normally but to lie as still as possible.

The technologist will advise when the exam is done, and you will be escorted back to the front desk reception.

You can request a copy of the images on a CD before you leave so you can share it with any doctor.

Yes, for a small additional fee you can get additional copies.

The results will be done within 48 hours and will be delivered both to you and your doctor through email or fax.
